WBCSD at COP16 UN Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity
At COP16, under the theme “Peace with Nature,” governments will be tasked with reviewing the state of implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Governments, academia, cities, indigenous communities, youth groups, businesses, financial institutions and civil society will come together to share progress to date and their plans to contribute to the implementation of Biodiversity Plan. Parties to the Convention are expected to show the alignment of their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the Framework. As a major steppingstone toward COP30 next year, COP16 will be a key moment for the world to come together to drive action and ambition on the implementation of the Biodiversity Plan.
CBD identified 3 priority areas for action:
Alignment or updating of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the Biodiversity Plan; monitoring, reporting and reviewing of implementation will be key to driving evidence-based progress.
Closing the financing gap and aligning financial flows with the Biodiversity Plan, including the development of the monitoring and resource mobilization framework – Global Biodiversity Framework Fund.
Agreeing on operationalizing the multilateral mechanism on access and benefit-sharing – referred to as ABS – for the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from Digital Sequence Information on genetic resources, including a global fund.
WBCSD engagement priorities
UNCBD COP16 is a moment for the world to come together to drive action and ambition on the implementation of the Biodiversity Plan. The global goal to halt and reverse nature loss cannot be achieved without the participation of the private sector in both the effective development and implementation of NBSAPs. We will bring the voice of the business community to COP16 and will focus on the following priorities:
- Translating the ambitious goals of the Biodiversity Plan into concrete action: We will ensure business is involved to speed up action on the NBSAPs.
- Backing accountability to strengthen action for the biodiversity goals: Further work on headline indicators, targets and standards is necessary to demonstrate accountability and enable impactful action.
- Supporting a just transition that delivers for people and planet: We will contribute to defining and shaping a just transition agenda with an emphasis on the role business and investors in enhancing green skills, championing inclusive community engagement and financing a just transition.
- Driving implementation and investment in credible National and Business Action Plans: We will profile business implementation with governments to close the gap on delivering national and corporate transition plans and build backing for transition planning norms for corporates.
