Scaling sustainable rice: Innovations from paddy to plate

28 July 2021, 8:00 – 8:50 am CEST

As part of the Pre-UN Food Systems Summit, WBCSD will (co-)host a series of sessions to mobilize private sector solutions and actions.

Rice is a key staple crop for half the world’s population, relied upon by 3.5 billion people for sustenance, and 144 million smallholders for income. But paddy fields also account for around 10% of global GHG emissions, a figure projected to increase to 15% by 2050.

Scaling resilient solutions for a more sustainable rice supply chains is therefore a priority for global nutrition, food security, and climate action, and a key part of the solution to this challenge is innovation across the value chain.

In this Pre-Summit affiliated session, speakers with extensive experience of the landscape will speak on the innovative technologies and instruments making sustainable rice feasible, securing its supply and contributing to climate action in the process.

This session is organized by the Sustainable Rice Landscapes Initiative (a consortium of the Sustainable Rice Platform, FAO, UNEP, GIZ, IRRI, and WBCSD).
