What is the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting?

The World Economic Forum is convening its 54th Annual Meeting in January. Under the theme Rebuilding Trust, the meeting aims to reaffirm the value and imperative of dialogue and public-private cooperation, and to reinforce the fundamental principles of transparency, consistency and accountability among leaders.

Here is an overview of our activities for the week. Please continue to consult this page for updated information.

Linking Climate Transformation to the Capital Markets, co-hosted with Syensqo

Date: 14 January 2024 | Time: 20:30 – 22:30 | Venue: ICE House | Type: High-level dinner (closed)

COP28 delivered the final outcome of the first Global Stocktake, marking the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era. Despite clarity around the need for the world to urgently act on climate change, misalignment with financial markets means that businesses are not on track to deliver game-changing solutions. We need a system-wide transformation across the real economy and financial markets to deliver a fossil fuel-free future. This will allow us to move to a more sustainable world, where more than 9 billion people are able to live well, within planetary boundaries, by 2050.

Select WBCSD Council Members, CEOs and leaders from key financial institutions and partner organizations will come together to explore missing links between the real economy and capital markets as well as opportunities for transformative system change.

Please kindly note that attendance at this event is by invitation only and invitations are non transferable.

Please contact Catherine Puga at puga@wbcsd.org if you have any questions.

With a focus on shaping our shared roadmap towards greater performance and accountability as it relates to “the S in ESG”, the session on “Tackling Inequality through Private Sector Leadership” seeks to bring together cross-sectoral executives of the Business Commission to Tackle Inequality (BCTI) as well as leading businesses and investors that play similarly catalytic roles in this agenda.

The breakfast is hosted by the House of Switzerland in close collaboration with Building Bridges and delivered in collaboration with the United Nations. Importantly, the session will coincide with the official announcement of a two-year extension of the BCTI. With a commitment to deliver tangible results on their BCTI Action Agenda, an expanded group of 70+ Commissioners will jointly start their countdown to COP30 in Brazil.

Nature Positive Strategy: what should your sector’s priority actions be?

Date: 18 January 2024 | Time: 10:00 – 11:30 | Venue: SDG tent | Type: Open event

Faced with the intertwined challenges of climate change and nature loss, businesses urgently need to take action to transform and innovate their operations and value chain. While 83% of Fortune Global 500 companies have climate change targets, only 5% of companies have assessed their impacts on nature, with less than 1% understanding their dependencies. A robust nature strategy with sector-specific understanding is the foundation for companies to meaningfully contribute to halting and reversing nature loss by 2030.

In the lead-up to UNCBD COP16 in 2024, this session will mobilize business ambition, analyse the necessary element of a nature strategy, signpost available resources, and identify key barriers for implementation and uptake.
