Stockholm +50 is a key international environmental meeting hosted by Sweden and Kenya. The UN convened meeting will celebrate 50 years since the 1972 UN Conference and establishment of UNEP and raise awareness on the importance of protecting our planet and driving action towards achieving sustainable development. Anchored in the Decade of Action, the theme of this meeting scheduled for 2-3 June 2022 is “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity.” More information can be found on the official website and in this briefing.
The UN has been engaging nations and stakeholders through national and regional consultations leading up to Stockholm +50, aiming for an action-oriented outcome that charts the way forward by highlighting key actions governments and other stakeholders can take to deliver on the 2030 Agenda and beyond.
The leadership dialogues address the following themes and background papers on each of these can be found here.
- Leadership Dialogue 1: Reflecting on the urgent need for actions to achieve a healthy planet and prosperity of all (co-chaired by Canada and Ecuador)
- Leadership Dialogue 2: Achieving a sustainable and inclusive recovery from the coronavirus pandemic (covid-19) and other economic shocks (co-chaired by Germany and Indonesia)
- Leadership Dialogue 3: Accelerating the implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development in the context of the Decade of Action and delivery for sustainable development (co-chaired by Egypt and Finland)
Stockholm+50 offers an opportunity for nations and stakeholders to collaborate, share expertise and address complex nexus issues for urgent actions and long-term system change. It can identify solutions and actions of a cross-cutting nature to drive implementation through a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, leaving no one behind.

Business engagement and contribution to the meeting
WBCSD, together with the Stockholm Environment Institute and the Stockholm +50 secretariat is leading private sector engagement around Stockholm +50. We are partnering to call for a rapid and sustainable Value Chain Transformation across sectors. For this purpose, we have convened two multi-stakeholder roundtables with over 60 participants (including WBCSD members); and have led a wider public survey process involving WBCSD members and other actors.
A unified business voice will be needed at the forefront of Stockholm +50 as we jointly develop the Stockholm Action Agenda to raise the collective level of ambition towards net-zero, nature-positive and equitable value chains. This process will lead us to the development of this synthesis report with concrete action recommendations for a sustainable transformation for six global value chains: Built environment, Electronics, Fashion, Food & Agriculture, Mobility and Travel & Tourism.
This is a unique opportunity for the business community to come together, positively influence the Stockholm+50 agenda through dialogue and joint learning and have a chance to feature existing business-led initiatives at the global stage.

Stockholm +50 agenda and associated events
The list of selected Side Events and organizing partners has now been published, with the full program published soon. Stockholm +50 preliminary program can be consulted here.
Associated events will serve a key complementary role to Stockholm+50, which are independently organized events and will provide a platform for diverse stakeholders to convene Stockholm+50-related events in association with the international meeting itself. The Deadline for submitting an associated event proposal is Sunday, 15 May 2022. Applicants are requested to not use the term “Stockholm+50” in the title of their event to avoid confusion between formal Stockholm+50 proceedings. Explore Associated Events here.
